Safer Seniors Program
City of Frankfort Fire and Police Departments
Are you a Frankfort senior citizen 65 years or older or do you know one of our beloved residents who is?
If so, the Frankfort Fire and Police Departments have launched their Safer Seniors Program, designed to help Frankfort seniors remain independent and safe in their homes.
Program Background
With a focus on public safety servants’ hearts taking care of Frankfort’s young-at-hearts, firefighters and police officers will visit senior citizens’ homes to perform safety checks for fire and safety hazards to take care of small risks before they become big dangers.
Visits are conducted every Thursday afternoon from 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. and take approximately 45 minutes and be scheduled on a first-come-first-served basis, with a maximum of two visits happening every Thursday afternoon.
What happens during a visit?
Firefighters and police officers will conduct a safety check and point out any potential hazards such as:
- cords stretched across a floor that are a trip hazard
- too many plugs in an outlet
- a heater too close to furniture
- smoke detectors that are not working
- poor door locks
- overgrown shrubs
- no outside lighting or indoor lights on timers
…and other items that when fixed, can keep senior homeowners more safe and secure.
Public safety officials will fill out a safety checklist during the visit and leave a copy with homeowners so they have a record of what safety measures already are in place and what residents can do to help make their homes safer from fires and criminal activity. A copy of the checklist will be kept on file with both public safety departments as well.
Courtesy of the Fire Department, senior homeowners also will receive a notched wooden oven rack handle to help avoid burns when taking food out of the oven and a wooden rod to easily reach the smoke detector button to ensure batteries are working.
How do I schedule a visit?
It’s easy! Call the Fire Department at 654-4329 and request a Thursday appointment.
Prevention of fire and crime is our goal.
