Mayoral statement on five-year anniversary of Sandy Hook tragedy

With today marking the fifth anniversary of the horrific tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, I ask you to join me in remembering the 20 innocent children and six staff members senselessly murdered that day.

As you may recall, the 20 precious children were six and seven years old, just starting to learn, grow and start their life journeys. Their futures were stolen that tragic day. The dedicated and beloved educators killed cared deeply for their students; some died shielding their students from the gunman.

With five years having passed since these killings rocked our nation to its core, we honor the memory of those lost that day, knowing they were – and are – greatly loved by their families and friends.  May God bless the 26 souls taken December 14, 2012. May God bless their still grieving parents and loved ones and may God watch over the entire Newtown community as they endure this difficult and painful anniversary.
