Mayoral statement – violence in Charlottesville, Virginia

I ask you to keep the Charlottesville, Virginia community in your thoughts and prayers following a very dangerous, difficult and painful weekend there. The deaths of three people – Heather Heyer and two Virginia State Patrol Troopers Lt. H. Jay Cullen and Trooper Berke M.M. Bates – are tragic and our hearts go out to their loved ones, along with the 19 people injured during the violence.

The hatred, violence, racism and bigotry demonstrated by white supremacists, neo-Nazis and the KKK are intolerable and despicable, striking at the heart of our nation and the values we hold dear.

We send our support and healing thoughts and prayers to all those injured as well as the residents, public safety officials and elected leaders in the grieving city of Charlottesville that they may find strength, unity, comfort and peace in the aftermath of such a sad and tragic weekend.

Mayor Chris McBarnes
