WHEREAS, Vernon J. Kaspar started in radio 76 years ago in 1936 as an amateur radio operator and still enjoys this hobby, having conversations weekly with friends all over the world, including having broadcast worldwide from King Hussein’s station in Jordan; and,
WHEREAS, Vern purchased his first radio station, WILO, in 1959 which he has owned and operated for 53 years and since 1978 has partnered with his son Russell Kaspar; and,
WHEREAS, Vern is CEO of Kaspar Broadcasting Company, Inc. which includes eight independently programmed radio stations and has been licensed by the Federal Communications Commission for the past 77 years; and,
WHEREAS, Vern has been instrumental in broadcasting numerous historic moments, including line-by-line narration of the first manned space launch, using a split headset listening to NBC in one ear and CBS in the other while reading progress reports over the teletype wire, Vern integrated three sources of information into one broadcast; and,
WHEREAS, Vern has interviewed national and international newsmakers all over the world in his long and distinguished career, including Crown Prince Abdula of Saudi Arabia and Nobel Peace Prize recipient Archbishop Desmond Tutu; and,
WHEREAS, Vern has been a long-standing member of such prestigious organizations as the National Broadcast Editorial Association now the National Conference of Editorial Writers, the Missouri Broadcasters Association, the International Broadcasters Idea Bank and the Indiana Broadcast Pioneers Hall of Fame;
NOW THEREFORE, I, Chris McBarnes, in recognition of Vern’s 90th birthday and his more than 75 years of innovative leadership in the radio broadcast industry, do hereby proclaim Friday, January 13, 2012 as
Vernon J. Kaspar Day
Blessed to have Vern’s sage insights and generous spirit, we celebrate Vern as a nationally recognized and locally beloved radio pioneer, entrepreneur and broadcast journalist who enlightens our minds and enhances our lives.
